recent events and upcoming projects (individual & Related Tactics)
In early October, Related Tactics (Michele Carlson, Weston Teruya, & Nate Watson) travelled to Milwaukee for Material Practice, a convening organized by the great team at Ruth Foundation for the Arts. During our time with the rest of the grantees, we offered a workshop considering “what if collectivity were material?” through prompts organized in our custom designed card deck. The exercise was an experiment to begin talking through the complexities of collaborative and collective practice; acting as a container to examine ideas, experiences, and perspectives on working together.
At the end of September, I had the honor of speaking on a panel with other Asian American artists and activists during Edge on the Square‘s public arts festival, Under the Same Sun, alongside Sierra Katow, Vincent Pan, and TT Takemoto, moderated by Miko Lee.
I was also fortunate to join with an ongoing group of Okinawan American community folks who have been in conversation with Mieko Walden about her memoir and memories of her childhood in Okinawa, adoption by an American millitary family, and life since then. We shared a recording our conversation around the first two chapters of her book and accompanying illustrations as part of the Tadaima 2023 virtual pilgirmage.
Over the summer, Related Tactics contributed a piece to be included in Monument Lab‘s Pulling Together newspaper/exhibition guide accompanying their temporary public art exhibition on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Monumental Sense was our set of prompts to eplore the landscape of monuments and public space–and the histories both there and missing.
And in case you missed it, also over the Summer, friend of Related Tactics , Namita Gupta Wiggers utilized our newly designed version of Shelf Life (on left in image below) to invite critical exploration of the library at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
Among other projects in development at the moment, I’ll be creating a new installation to be presented at the Berkeley Civic Arts Commission’s Cube Gallery, a platform at the Center Street Garage, part their public art program. Exhibition dates in Spring 2024 to be announced soon. (image below is a very early stage sketch)
And finally, if you’re in Los Angeles, I’ll be giving a talk at the UCLA MFA Graduate Center on December 1st as part of their Visiting Artists Lecture Series (VALS). More details soon.
