The city breathing (version 1), deYoung Museum

paper sculptural installation from assorted papers including tar paper, recycled office papers, pulp, and paper thread
2017

While in residence with the deYoung Museum’s Artists Studio program, I created a sculptural piece that explored the history and dynamics of San Francisco in response to a pair of interactive arts activities that invited museum visitors to discuss and envision changes in the city (whether that be San Francisco or their own hometowns). These hands on activities included a cityscape that people could help build and customize and question cards that asked about transitions people have seen, what they value in their communities, and spaces that bring people together.

This installation piece is the first iteration of what may be a longer series of responses to these collected ideas of our city; an abstracted landscape that brings together paper sculptural recreations of natural elements, reimagined architectures, snippets of social movement history, and cultural signifiers.
