exhibition updates: Makibaka at YBCA (8/1-1/4) and Recology 35th at Minnesota St (7/23-8/30)
I’m happy to have work featured in two exhibitions honoring beloved San Francisco cultural institutions close to my heart: SOMA Pilipinas and the Recology SF Artist-in-Residence program. Makibaka: A Living Legacy at YBCA Aug. 1-Jan. 4 is curated by Trisha Lagaso Goldberg and SOMA Pilipinas and Art/Education/Community: 35 Years at Recology AIR will be at Minnesota Street Projects (July 23-Aug 30).
from the YBCA announcement:
MAKIBAKA: A Living Legacy boldly celebrates the culture, contributions, and presence of the Filipino community in the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood and Bay Area. Presented by SOMA Pilipinas in collaboration with YBCA, and inspired by the Filipino term for collective resistance, MAKIBAKA brings together contemporary artworks alongside community-held objects, memories, and movements.
The exhibition showcases remarkable intergenerational creative expression which defies easy categorization. The exhibition is timed to coincide with beloved community festivals, Pistahan and the Parol Lantern Festival, both returning to YBCA this fall. MAKIBAKA, co-curated by SOMA Pilipinas and Trisha Lagaso Goldberg, features artists including Erina Alejo, Kimberly Acebo Arteche, Rea Lynn de Guzman, England Hidalgo, Joanna Poethig, Weston Teruya, Lucille Tenazas, and more.
and from Recology:
In keeping with past anniversary celebrations, this milestone exhibition, Art/Education/Community – 35 Years at Recology AIR, will feature work by Recology artists-in-residence from the past five years, along with a screening of videos and films from various years in the Media Room. Featured in Gallery 107 will be works by student artists from the Student Artist in Residence Program, Recology AIR board members and staff who have participated in the program, and pieces from a special partnership with Creativity Explored. Together, these works highlight the lasting impact and enduring legacy of one of the Bay Area’s most beloved and long-standing programs.
