workshop (7/20): DTYA (Cao Lãnh, Đồng Tháp)
On July 20th I took a bus ride over to Cao Lãnh to give a quick artist talk and workshop for students taking part in the Đồng Tháp Youth Agency summer camp. DTYA is a completely youth initiated and led group and they organized this 6-day gathering for youth from throughout Việt Nam to come together and learn. The visit was too brief, but the thoughtfulness and skills the group brought to the process made the trip more than worth it.
In the workshop, I invited the students to create paper sculptures of something that represents “home” (in all it’s complications, whether where they live, a speculative place, someplace isolated, or within community). These pieces then served as storytelling prompts for people to talk about their concepts and reflections.
My work in Saigon is made possible through a residency at A. Farm, fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council, and additional funding from the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
