2018 Rainin Foundation Exploring Public Art Practices Symposium
March 10, 1-5:30pm, James Moore Theater, Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak Street, Oakland
I’m excited to be co-organizing this year’s Kenneth Rainin Foundation Exploring Public Art Practices Symposium with the brilliant Deena Chalabi. The foundation launched the symposium to expand upon their Open Spaces grant program, which supports ambitious temporary public art projects in Oakland and San Francisco. I’ve put together a panel exploring the theme of “Space & Time” featuring Ellen Sebastian Chang & Amara Tabor Smith (House/Full of BlackWomen, Oakland), Tomie Arai, ManSee Kong, & Betty Yu (Chinatown Art Brigade, New York), and Imani Jacqueline Brown (Blights Out, New Orleans); with a discussion moderated by Michele Carlson. Deena Chalabi’s panel, “Conversations, Counterpoints, Crossroads,” will feature Chitra Ganesh (New York), Ala Ebtekar (Oakland), Dawn Weleski (Pittsburgh), and Chris Johnson (Oakland); with a discussion moderated by Deena.
